Children's orthodontic assessments now only £50!  Beat The NHS Waiting List

Eating with braces

Starting braces treatment doesn’t mean you need to give up all your favourite foods. In fact, with a few minor changes, you should still be able to enjoy most of your favourite things. Just remember, it’s important to clean your teeth and appliance after every meal and snack to keep your smile healthy.

Foods you can have

  • Soft foods - such as scrambled eggs, pancakes, porridge and pasta
  • Dairy products - like yoghurt and soft cheese
  • Meat - cut into pieces or opt for meat balls rather than something you need to bite into
  • Smoothies - try to order ones without seeds that can get stuck in your appliance
  • Fruit and vegetables – try grating your apple, rather than biting into it, and cooking your carrots instead of eating them raw

 Foods you can have

Foods to avoid

  • Popcorn – sorry, you’ll need to find a different snack for movie nights! Popcorn kernels can get stuck between your teeth, and require removal of your appliance to retrieve
  • Hard or chewy sweets and toffees – these can break or dislodge your appliance, as can other hard things like ice cubes
  • Sugary drinks – we advise you to avoid these all the time anyway, but they can especially increase the risk of decay during treatment
  • Fingernails – we’re serious - chewing on fingernails or the end of your pen can damage your braces
  • Pizza crusts – you can still enjoy the topping through
