Orthognathic (Jaw) Surgery in London

Realign your smile & transform your life

A harmonious smile goes beyond straight teeth. When the upper and lower jaws do not align correctly, it can affect chewing, speech, breathing and even confidence. Orthognathic surgery - also known as jaw surgery - repositions the jaws to restore balance and function.

At Origin Orthodontics, our specialist orthodontist Dr Usman Qureshi partners with renowned maxillofacial surgeon Mr Manolis Heliotis to deliver life‑changing results.

Pre‑surgery orthodontics

Before surgery, Dr Qureshi will use braces or aligners to align your teeth and create the ideal fit for the new jaw position. This phase typically lasts 12-18 months and is essential for a stable result.

Surgery by experts

Jaw surgery is carried out in hospital under general anaesthetic by Mr Manolis Heliotis. He repositions your jaw(s) with tiny titanium plates and screws to hold them securely.

Recovery & support

Expect some swelling and bruising, plus a soft diet for several weeks. You’ll have regular follow‑ups with our team and can contact us any time for advice.

Post‑surgery orthodontics

After surgery, we continue orthodontic treatment for six to twelve months to fine‑tune your bite and ensure long‑lasting stability. We’ll remove your braces once your jaws and teeth are perfectly aligned, and fit retainers to maintain the result.

Smile success

A balanced bite, improved facial harmony and relief from functional issues such as jaw pain or sleep apnoea provide life‑changing benefits. Our team will continue to support you during retention and beyond.

“The combination of my clear aligner and fixed brace treatment to correct my bite was a success. Using the Dental Monitoring app meant that Dr. Qureshi could monitor my treatment remotely and provide feedback. Visits to the practice were therefore minimal which was an advantage being a full time university student. I would like to thank Dr. Qureshi and all the team for the support I received during my treatment. I highly recommend Origin Orthodontics”

Frequently asked questions about jaw surgery

What is orthognathic surgery?

Orthognathic surgery, or jaw surgery, is a planned operation to reposition your upper jaw, lower jaw or both to improve bite, facial balance and function. It’s recommended when braces alone cannot correct significant jaw discrepancies.

Why might I need jaw surgery?

You may need jaw surgery if you have difficulty biting or chewing, speech problems, facial asymmetry, jaw pain, an open bite or underbite, or sleep apnoea. A consultation with our team will determine whether surgery is the best option.

How long does treatment take?

Orthognathic treatment is a long‑term process. Pre‑surgery orthodontics typically lasts 12-18 months. After surgery, a further 6-12 months of orthodontics is needed. The total treatment time is usually two to three years.

Will I look different after surgery?

Jaw surgery can enhance facial harmony and profile, so some changes are expected. Many patients enjoy a more balanced appearance and increased confidence. Our team will discuss anticipated changes and show you digital simulations using 3D planning.

Does jaw surgery hurt?

You will be under general anaesthetic during the procedure and won’t feel pain. Afterwards, some swelling and discomfort are normal, but these are managed with medication and usually improve within a few weeks.

What is recovery like?

Most patients stay in hospital for one to three nights. You’ll need to follow a soft diet for several weeks and may experience swelling and bruising. Regular follow‑ups with your surgeon and orthodontist ensure everything heals correctly. Our remote monitoring app means you can check in from home.

Are there any risks?

Jaw surgery is a well‑established procedure performed by experienced teams. As with any surgery, there are risks such as infection, nerve injury or relapse, but these are rare. Mr Heliotis will discuss potential complications and how they are managed so you can make an informed decision.
